Women in Local Government Networking Breakfast- Diversity, Creativity, Prosperity
Friday, October 22nd, 2010
There are many spheres of decision making that women are yet to conquer. Of all these, local government is possibly one of the most important, yet ignored areas in the gender and development debate in the Pacific.
A women in local government networking breakfast was hosted for the first time by the Commonwealth Local Government Forum at their recent Pacific Regional Symposium held in Port, Vila Vanuatu.
The breakfast was based around the theme of ‘Diversity, Creativity and Prosperity’. In attendance, were around 30 participants from across the region who came to listen to presentations from key speakers. The speakers included Adi Sivia Qoro (CLGF Research Consultant), Mr John Ravlic (Executive Director of Local Government Managers Australia), Councillor Jenny Tasale (Port Vila’s first Woman Councillor), and Mrs Hilda Lini (former member of Vanuatu Parliament, a chief of the Turaga nation on Pentecost Island, Vanuatu and a well known women’s and indigenous rights activist).
The event was also held in solidarity with the Australian Year of Women in Local Government (YoWiLG 2010) which aims to raise awareness of the opportunities for, benefits of, and the need for increasing the participation of women in leadership and management roles within local government.
