UNIFEM Pacific welcomes appointment of Michell Bachelet as head of UN Women

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM Pacific – part of UN Women) welcomed the announcement today of Ms Michelle Bachelet, the former Chilean President to the high level
UN Post, Under Secretary General (USG) to head United Nations Women (UN Women).

Ms Elizabeth Cox, Regional Programme Director of UNIFEM Pacific (now part of UN Women) enthusiastically welcomed the appointment of Ms Bachelet. ”We congratulate Michelle Bachelet to the new UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. We applaud the selection of a prominent and accomplished leader from the global south to this important post and to the higher ranks of the UN system.  A person of Ms Bachelet’s high-standing, credentials and calibre in the global political and development community is a wonderful boost to the inauguration of UN Women. We are confident that Ms. Bachelet will be instrumental in driving the important mandate of the new Gender Entity forward in the UN system and in the global development scene.
“Ms Bachelet brings to this critical position a history of dynamic global leadership, well honed political skills and uncommon ability to create consensus and focus among UN agencies and many partners in both the public and
private sector.  UNIFEM Pacific considers Ms Bachelet’s appointment to be a major step in gaining global leaders and donors trust in and support for the new entity and its mammoth task to advance gender equality in the Pacific and
across the globe.  UNIFEM Pacific is proud to be a part of UN Women and very proud of our new leader.  We have every confidence that she will do justice to the challenges and opportunities of this exciting new post and the
transition process towards the full establishment of UN Women.”
